Wait, what? |
Hi, I'm Angela. I'm a white, cis woman who would enjoy long walks on the beach but that means I'd have to leave my apartment. In my spare time I enjoy crying about tv shows, procrastinating on assignments even after they're due, and pretending my alcohol tolerance is higher than what it actually is. Things you'll find on this blog are Homestuck, comics, Teen Wolf, Doctor Who, and a variety of other fandoms and pictures of kittens and puppies. |
plot twist: the writers of Teen Wolf look up wolfsbane and figure out that it’s poisonous to werewolves AND just about everything else
one of the problems of 1st person narration in an action/horror story is that you know the main character is at least going to survive through the end by the basis of the format. well at least if there’s not a change in perspective which there could be but that feels kinda meh as a storytelling device imo
also with stories where the narration obviously is taking place from somewhere in the future, like a framing device where the character is telling their story to someone else.
i guess what i mean is that it’s hard to truly feel anxiety for these characters in tense situations because the format of the writing guarantees their safety and/or survival. it’s kinda like watching a tv episode and they “solve” whatever problem they have but the episode is only halfway done so you know that the characters really haven’t

i see a lot on the whole “Scott needs to grow up before he can handle the responsibility of being an Alpha” argument, but for whatever reason i never see that argument directed at any of the other characters
like where’s the argument that Derek needs to grow up before he can be the Alpha he wants everyone to think he is? where’s the argument that Stiles needs to grow up and stop pushing his feelings at Lydia in the hopes that she’ll return them? why is the character who has done the most consistent growing up in the show the one who is constantly told he needs to grow even more before the fans will be happy?
I’m just awake so excuse my even answering to this. Derek already is the Alpha, and despite that, 98% of the fandom basically says he sucks at being one… and shouldn’t be one, so the answer to “where’s the argument” is EVERYWHERE. Same with Stiles to be honest. I haven’t come across one person who hasn’t said Stiles needs to get the fuck over Lydia. So, again EVERYWHERE. About Scott’s growing up, which he has done in season 2, like, a lot…
Why compare a character to another? Only because Derek shouldn’t be an Alpha (which I don’t agree with but that’s another argument) doesn’t mean Scott should be an Alpha. Only because Stiles should get over Lydia doesn’t mean Scott should get over Allison? etc etc
I know what you were trying to do is defend Scott and I know why you’re doing that. But there’s no need to overlook the fact that Scott still is just a teenager and no teenager should have to take on this responsibility, especially when they’re still fighting with being a werewolf at all.
Scott will become an Alpha. We’ve seen it. And I dig this story line for him so much. But I want to see him struggle, not because I hate him or want him to hurt, but because I think it’s very realistic that he wouldn’t take to it like a fish to water.
Scott McCall wants to save everyone, which is an A++ basis for being a leader. But being an Alpha is about so much more… Things Scott might not be ready to do yet (like, kill one innocent person to save a whole lot of other people… which I believe there’s a 99,9% chance Scott will have to face and will probably come out once again as the savior in last minute.. which is not the point.) but will have to do eventually.
Scott McCall rocks, and he’s growing into a person with definite potential to be a leader… but yeah. I’d like this story line to be as realistic as possible.
so those were just like examples off the top of my head that really bugged me, but i don’t see them anywhere from where i’ve been lurking in this fandom because most of the time it’s either Sterek centric or people praising Stiles for i don’t know existing
meanwhile Scott gets hate dumped on him just about continuously with people complaining that he shouldn’t an alpha until he grows up more and also asking for him to be decapitated (which is seriously not cool and really really makes me angry.
this post is more me saying “hey Teen Wolf fandom, why is it that you give these characters a free pass to do a lot of horrible shit while continuously shitting on Scott and then making it like it’s HIS problem that you don’t like him because he’s not “”“”mature”“”” enough??” even though, like i said in the original, Scott has grown the most out of probably every single character on the show. this isn’t saying that Scott DOESN’T need to mature more, but he’s the only one i’ve seen singled out because of it
i have no doubt that the story line is going to be a lot more complex than the fans already seem to be making it (because i doubt this is just going to be Scott saying “i wanna be the alpha!!” and expecting it to be so). in fact i expect that becoming an alpha is going to happen when he’s pushed so far to the edge that he has no choice but to step up even further than he already has.
