Wait, what? |
Hi, I'm Angela. I'm a white, cis woman who would enjoy long walks on the beach but that means I'd have to leave my apartment. In my spare time I enjoy crying about tv shows, procrastinating on assignments even after they're due, and pretending my alcohol tolerance is higher than what it actually is. Things you'll find on this blog are Homestuck, comics, Teen Wolf, Doctor Who, and a variety of other fandoms and pictures of kittens and puppies. |
when i’m reminded just how much Lobdell doesn’t give a shit, i just get really angry.
it doesn’t matter if i don’t read DC comics anymore, i still can’t see his shitty writing without raging
[Red Hood and the Outlaws 7]
Did anyone else cringe when they read these panels? Jason’s unwilling to execute a guy who was going around murdering aliens and almost killed Kory because he’s not technically a criminal in the eyes of outdated Earth laws (which do not recognize aliens as people or citizens). “He wasn’t going to go to jail” so apparently he’s therefore not a candidate for Outlaws-style justice.
I just.
???????????
????????????????????
Is this not the exact opposite of Jason’s usual mentality? Isn’t a large part of his raison d’etre as a vigilante to personally take out evildoers because the criminal justice system is, in his opinion, inadequate? In what universe is Jason only willing to take out people who would otherwise be “going to jail”?
????????????????????????????????????????
Then I remember oh, it’s Lobdell and go back to laughing with salad. Alone and through my tears. Felipe Garzonas is probably over here, too.
(Also, these panels are an excellent example of really poor storytelling. Jason doesn’t seem to be talking at and trying to convince Kory of this nonsensical sequence of actions as much as he is the audience. It’s like accidentally breaking the fourth wall in the worst way.)
Yeah this didn’t make sense to me either. I had to read it a couple of times before I understood what he was talking about. It really pissed me off too.

Glad to see that even DC’s target demographic is outraged with this issue.
Hey, I’m the author of that article, thank you for sharing it.
If anyone is inclined feel free to read. Spoilers and trigger warnings for those that might need it.

mostly what i don’t get about lobdell is like… he makes changes, well, that’s fine, the dcu could use some changing. but then it’s like, he changes stuff to make it LESS interesting. he changes the stuff that was WORKING before. like tim drake’s origin story; like lois’s role in the superman mythos—not even as clark’s wife/love interest, just her role as a reporter, even!
and kory’s personality changing from like joyful, emotional, exuberant, full of passion and righteous fury—to what? terminally bored goldfish?
and then the reason jason and bruce were on the outs, like—that was brilliant, and complex, and tragic. and then lobdell just went and smashed it into something simpler and boring and i just like—i don’t see the point of that at all
it’s like
change can be good, but change for change’s sake is…. kind of pointless
especially when what you were changing was better before
“Tim Drake is the reason I became a comic fan to begin with. That being said: I am really enjoying Lobdell’s writing. I don’t feel like he has “ruined” Tim’s character. Or any of the character’s he’s writing.”
…I’m going to ignore the confession entirely because THAT TWEET MAKES NO SENSE.
How, when Batman has only been Batman for about 5 years, was Tim, the third sidekick (can’t call him Robin anymore!), with him for ‘several years’?
Several means more than two.
Which means that Dick was Robin for a year, Jason was Robin for a year, Tim was Batman’s sidekick for three years, and Damian only just started? No.
Also, shut the fuck up about “origin 90% intact”. You know what’s 90% intact? That biiiiig old bullshit wall you’ve been constructing. At least, it was as of July, before we actually got to read Tim’s origin.
He had loving parents that he ignored to try and figure out who Batman was. He put his own family in harm’s way with that bit of detective work. His parents had to go into witness protection without him, leaving him in the more than capable hands of a perfect stranger. This is all before we get to the fact that Tim didn’t discover who Batman was on his own, was never shown to have idolized Dick Grayson, who was the whole reason he was even able to figure out the big secret, oh, and he was never Robin, having always been Red Robin. And his name may not even actually be Tim Drake, what with the whole witness protection thing causing the whole family to have to change their names, and the story was told in the past tense.
That’s not 90% of his origin intact, Scott. Your tweet is a pack of lies.
scott lobdell and the people who try to defend him and what he’s doing make me laugh.
and cry.
mostly cry.
So, Scott Lobdell displayed his general Twitter etiquette today.
Let me start out by saying a few things:
(Newest comments are first, oldest last.)
1. I did misinterpret his initial response. My bad. When I asked about Roy’s Navajo heritage, I thought I was being clear that I meant his connection to the Navajo culture, not his ambiguous Native blood. I apologize for that, since I do get the feeling that a lot of the drama from his ostensibly changing Roy’s background was not deserved.
2. I still do think Scott’s comment, legitimate question or not, was poorly phrased. I now understand what he intended, but people still took offense, and he should have apologized for that rather than acting like people saying that he said something with a lot of racist connotations was the gravest of insults. If I step on someone’s foot without meaning to, I still apologize.
3. I also still think Scott is a racist and a misogynist. Not because of his comment, but because I’ve read RHATO. Which also gave further reason for his comments to be taken as insensitive.
4. The last comment on my part was probably somewhat off-topic, but, hell, I’d been wanting to get that off my chest for a while.
5. Whatever else, I think we can all agree that DC’s PR department has no Twitter policy.
It’s ironic, b/c I was actually all set to post a “My bad, Scott actually meant this, though I still think his question had enough in common with racist statements about people who don’t ‘look’ Native not being Native enough that he should apologize” Tumblr post before this conversation continued, the Android app just wouldn’t let me post it.
Somehow, I don’t think he’s going to be answering any more of my questions.
I’m really disappointed in Lobdell.
It’s easy to say something hurtful without meaning to. I’ve done it.
When someone points out that you’ve said or done something hurtful or offensive, it’s natural to feel defensive about it, because hey, you “didn’t mean it that way”, you didn’t intentionally hurt someone, so it should be okay, right?
Well, no.
If you hurt someone, whether you meant to or not, you should apologize. Like, if you step on someone’s foot, you say, “Oops, excuse me! I didn’t mean to do that.” Right? That’s just common courtesy. You don’t say, “Hey, I obviously didn’t mean to step on your foot. What’s your problem?”
I know people who were personally, deeply hurt by Lobdell’s “How many ginger Navajos are there?” query. I think he should apologize. If he is genuinely interested in the answer, that’s fine, too. That doesn’t mean that an apology is inappropriate or unnecessary.
Another example of how defending oneself against any association with the word “racism” is more important than not being racist… I can’t say I’m disappointed in Lobdell because it’s been a long time since I’ve expected any better from him.
Oh my god. Like I read the tweets like four times before I could figure out what I was reading. This isn’t edited. This isn’t bullshit.
Scott Lobdell really doesn’t care about anything but himself. He doesn’t care that he’s actually perpetuating stereotypes and being racist. All that matters is that people need to stop saying that he’s racist. Because yeah… that’s what’s important.
And seriously, the whole mentality that he has of “if you have a tumblr, you must be in some way inferior to me” is disgusting. He’s not even saying social justice, not even trying to play the code. This man is flat out dismissing any criticism that comes from people on this site because… shit I can’t even try to come up for a reason for his bullshit.
Seriously if I see you try to defend him/his blatant and unapologetic racism, we’re going to have words.
Ugh ugh ugh I feel so fucking unclean that I ever bought any of his shitty ass books.

But it’s like he is just constantly shouting from the rooftops just how horrible he is. He can’t or won’t take any criticism seriously. He believes it’s the fault of the people reading and not him if they don’t like his work.
And his work (at least the stuff he’s done at DC, I haven’t read the Marvel stuff) sucks. It’s been said before multiple times, but he has no idea who these characters are nor does he care to find out. And I wouldn’t give a fucking damn if he was doing this kind of shit with his own original characters. (Well I would because what he’s doing is a load of bullshit, but I wouldn’t have the previous emotional attachment to them). And if it wasn’t enough that his work sucks, but his attitude is so very toxic with condescension and denial.

This twitter account has not been verified, but I have seen Lobdell (or someone using his name) post on reviews of his comics where he responds in a condescending manner. Not only does he not acknowledge that he might have done something wrong in writing, he basically goes out of the way to say “but you should be on MY side!” when it comes to those slut-shaming Starfire. He ‘explains’ his reasoning for Isabel, the flight attendant, to practically crawl into Jason’s lap and give him her number, but doesn’t acknowledge that this once again puts men into a power fantasy and women into sexual objects to be fantasized about.
I even try to stay away from this man, but he’s popping up everywhere! DC seems to be throwing books at him for some hitherto unknown reason.
In shot, I hate this man. I hate what he writes. I hate his reactions to people not liking his fucking horrible comics. I hate him. Scott Lobdell pretty much embodies the very essence of all things in comics that keeps new readers away. The elitism, the sexism disguised as “empowerment”, and inability to realize that alienating everyone but cis, straight, white men doesn’t earn you any brownie points.
Because really I just keep waiting for the moment when they’ll fuck up a character I love and cause me pain. I’m not saying that I don’t feeling enough for a character that they make me feel things, but when they’re killed off screen so that another character can benefit (Helena Bertinelli) or when they’re changed so drastically that they don’t even feel like the same character (Jason Todd, Starfire, anyone Lobdell touches) I just don’t want anything to do with comics.
And this makes me sad and angry because these were once something I really enjoyed and now I just expect them to cause me pain. I don’t want the characters I love to be hijacked and held hostage by people who don’t give a shit about them. I don’t want to wonder about the long term ramifications these actions will have on them with other writers. I don’t want to care.
